i have ordered PCB and will sometime buy parts, i have programming stuff for altera already :-) i'm not really a spectrum guy but this looks like a fun project and a good use for one of my empty zx81 cases :mrgreen:

Go back to using the second circuit above and put a small 33pf ( or maybe 100pf) cap from ~CE to GND some newer and faster memory chips release the data lines a little bit too quick for the poor ula to fully capture the data. The image above of the zx81shows that sometimes it gets the right data and...

I would check for shorts near the data pins of the cpu, the track clearances are quite close around there, also the diodes near the keyboard connector some.of the traces run very close to the diode pads.

Other than it not working it looks very nice, good job so far.

Well for zxpand joystick input, near the start of my program i tested to see if zxpand is present, the code for this will not crash a not zxpand machine, and then set a flag accordingly. Later on during user input routine the flag is tested and joystick input skipped if zxpand not present. Regards A...

As default settings when you check the zxpand box yes... but must retain the ability to change the settings... for example original zxpand with no sound chip, UDG board over-riding wrx.
