Play Expo

Post by Chad »

Just wondered if anyone from here is going along to Play Expo in Manchester this weekend? Whilst not a vintage computer show, they say on their site that there's an 8-bit micro section so I'll be having a nose around there :)

I know a few people that may be going but I won't be. Let us know how the old black box gets represented please!

I know that there will be at least 1 zx81 there (mine).

Has anyone got any suggestions for software to put on my ZXPand to show it off to its best (Last year it spent most of its time playing Manic Miner and 3D monster Maze)

UWOL with joystick?
Or MinerMan (also with joystick)?

Sadly I don't have the Joystick wired up - I already had MinerMan on my list but will definately be adding Uwol as well.

If you had a ZXpand-AY, then you could use the joystick and sound to play some of the latest games, such as Mayhem! :)

That was a crowd pleaser at the Spectrum is 30 show

Great, I'll come and say hello! :) I think any of the new releases would be a good showcase. It's quite easy to tack a joystick connector to the pads on the ZXPand, there's a post somewhere on here detailing how I did mine. This was before the AY module was released though so I'd just do it on a flying lead if I was to do it again.

I agree - the new games are very high quality and show off what the zeddy is capable of - RevivalStudios and Bobs set the action game standard.

As for 'surprise' games from the olde days: Alien Rain is simple and effective if a little poorly paced.

A ZXpand-AY is next on my shopping list so I didnt want to go around soldering anything on my ZXpand - so still no joystick.

Sadly if this event is anything like the previous 2 years you wouldnt be able to make out any sound coming from the ZXpand-AY anyway - the constant crap music and noise coming from the DDR machines just drowns out everything else.

I will be at the Amibay set-up in the re.play section, there is supposed to be a "Best of British" display as well so hopefully there will be a zx81 or two there as well.
