My 1000 is on its way OHIO

Hi. Ive always wanted to understand the real 1s and 0 of electrons can be moved around to look smart and I finally found a book that made sense to me. "Programing the Z-80" So one thing led to another and I ordered a 20 dollar 1000 on Ebay to mess around with. One of the classes I assist in is an electrical engineering class so I will have some support. Particularly interested in adding some inputs and out puts and burning a ROM. Perhaps create a breadboard that automatically displays the voltage on the screen for each row using a lot of multiplexers.

If you want a really great book about how a cpu, ram and rom is working down to every 1 and 0 you can get the book But How Do It Know?. This book gave me the great Aha!

Thanks for the lead. Google play has a decent size sample of this book so I am going to really check it out.

So Bummer, my 1000 arrived and it is not putting out a video signal ( at least I think.) I didn't have a TV so I bypassed the modulator by soldering to the USA line into the modulator and to the ground. then connected it to a tested composite B&W monitor. I tested the power supply and the little doodad that converts it to 5V. they both work (I know the keyboard is completely disconnected but that should be easy.)

I'm sure this comes up all the time but could some one please direct me to a thread about systematic testing of the computer?

Can you make a proper video circuit?

Yes I can make that. I made a little progress today. There seems to be 2 labels on the board that say USA before it goes to the modulator One was kind of hiding. So I tried that line out (the one farthest to the left) because the oscilloscope showed a more convincing pattern. When I went from that line I got no text but I did get very thin black and white vertical lines. I will try this video circuit you linked to if there is a chance it will fix it. Thanks
