ZX81 multi-platform emulator

Post by hldswrth »

Just wanted to announce a big update to my website including a JavaScript-based emulator which should run on most platforms. I have tried it out on iPad, iPhone and a couple of Android phones and it seems to run fine (although a little slow on some devices). There's an on-screen keyboard for touch devices.

I'd love your feedback on the emulator and the site update.

Wonderful ! I also take the opportunity to thank you for your fantastic tape converter, it did magic things many times :)

Very cool... But it is slow on iPad and iPhone.

There's some ZX81 re-writes on the app store as well, particularly Rock Crush and 3D Monster Maze, but they're not free.

Can you improve performance on these platforms?

I've put a lot of effort into optimising the emulator and can't see how to get performance any better. iPad seems to run about 75%; iPhone 4 is slow but iPhone 5 runs very happily at 100%.

I was finding it very slow in an iPhone 6 (judging 3D Monster Maze emulated vs native iPhone version)...

But I realised it's Chrome. Running under Chrome is very slow (less than 20FPS).

But run it under Safari and it's 50FPS and nice and quick :)
