A video showing a complete playthrough of Against The Elements is now available on YouTube. The video shows the game utilising the colour facilities of the Chroma 81 SCART interface.

I've just released a minor update to Against the Elements that adds a slight performance improvement (when run on both 50Hz and 60Hz ZX81s). No other functionality is affected. The updated game can be downloaded from here.

I've created a patch for Against the Elements that allows the game to be played using the joystick socket of the ZXpand interface. The patch can be downloaded from here.

Well I ended up answering my own question regarding whether there were other games that used the alternate pseudo hi-res technique employed in Software Farm's Z-Xtricator!

Odyssey Computing released High Resolution Invaders in 1983, a year before Z-Xtricator, and it essentially uses the same technique but achieves it using a more convoluted display driver routine. Unlike Z-Xtricator where everything moves at character level resolution, i.e. 8 pixels, High Resolution Invaders makes efforts to move at finer resolution. This inevitably means that the graphics do not remain perfectly formed as they do in Z-Xtricator, but it does give the game's animation a much smoother feel.

I've listed some instructions to load High Resolution Invaders into the EightyOne emulator on this posting.

All the links to download "Against The Elements" seem to be coming back as error 404.
