I tried the assembled kit on my Performa Apple TV card with a vLA81 and it worked, I'm glad to say.
Unfortunately, I was testing another ZX81 issue 1 with a ZXvid composite mod and when I tried to pull the RCA cable out of the back of the Performa the whole motherboard tray came with it because the screws weren't tightened up and the computer shut down.
Although it started back up ok the screen started flickering like there's some interference, so I might've done something to it!

That picture (link) looks just like the symptoms of a ULA that does not generate a back porch signal, displayed on a device that needs the correct back porch signal to automatically calibrate its contrast to the correct values.
