On a more serious note should I ever come across such beasties in my travels, knowing that you are a serious collector as opposed to me being just a user I will gladly reserve buy or point you in the direction of said doofahs.
Re: "Different" ZX81's
Thanks appreciate it
Although I would say all my 'puters get an airing, none sit in a dark box wondering what they done to be shut away!

Glad to hear itFwapp wrote:Although I would say all my 'puters get an airing, none sit in a dark box wondering what they done to be shut away!
BTW, if you aim for collecting as many Zeddy variations as possible, going beyond the three different PCBs and the three ULAs, there are rather a lot...

Re: "Different" ZX81's
I can imagine there is!
The rough list I've come up with - and based upon UK Sinclair releases
I'm discounting memory configurations as well
Issue 1 = Green Soldermask
Issue 3 = Red Soldermask
Issue 1 with 2c158e/bugged ROM
Issue 1 with 2c158e/bugged ROM and kludge ROM fix
Issue 1 with 2c184e/bugged ROM
Issue 1 with 2c184e/bugged ROM and kludge ROM fix
Issue 1 with 2c184e/fixed ROM
Issue 1 with 2c184e/bugged ROM and kludge ROM fix (PCB cream coloured/green soldermask)
Issue 1 with 2c184e/fixed ROM (PCB cream coloured/green soldermask)
Issue 1 with 2c210e/ROM
Issue 1 with 2c210e and eprom instead of ROM
Issue 3 with 2c210e/ROM
Issue 3 with 2c210e and eprom instead of ROM
Issue 3 with 2c210e/Rom (green soldermask)
I've got or seen the above and I'm happy to have have a version of some of the above rather than each one (I have a 8111 2c158e with a ROM kludge, so happy not to have a 2c184e with a kludge etc.
One obscurity (posted by Spirantho on FB) was a Sinclair Issue 1 PCB with Made in Spain on the PCB - quite different!
I'm all ears if there are anymore, especially if there are pictures

Re: "Different" ZX81's
This article seems to suggest hand assembly of the boards.

Re: "Different" ZX81's
Ooooh, nice find! Love this sort of thing.
Along with the pictures, it pretty much says "Hand Built in Britain" , which a bit scary!
Had this turn up today.
Issue 3 with green soldermask. The components are sitting high on the pcb, not flat and the PCB manufacturer is different as well. Maybe Sinclair tried a different assembler?

Re: "Different" ZX81's
I started a thread here which links to a book suggesting a change in 1983.

Mark opines that it is probably factually incorrect and I'm inclined to agree with him, something to ponder never the less.
Excellent board by the way!
I also have issue 3's with high sitting components.

Ta
Interesting link - as mentioned on the other post, I read recently about a potential move by Sinclair, this board maybe linked to a tentative move (a bit like the Saga ULA that turned up recently, as Sinclair looked to possibly move from Ferranti for ULA's)
