Broken resistor in an issue 3 16k RAM pack

Post by Lardo Boffin »

I was changing capacitors in an issue 3 Sinclair RAM pack and had a clumsy moment. Basically I knocked a resistor and there was a small crunching sound and it broke. In my defence the board is more compact and closely placed than the issue 1!

Do these things get brittle with age?

Any idea how I go about identifying said resistor and replacing it - assuming it is possible with something so small...

Any help (or chastisement for break stuff) welcome!

The ram pack was working before I broke it.

That there is a diode. It will have the designation 1N41xx where the xx is not visible in the photo. Let us know the full number, I'm sure someone will have one or 2 in their bits boxes.

Luckily there was more than just one photo.
It shows it's a 1N4148 which is a "standard" Diode. Whenever someone speaks about a diode and no other specification we have a 1N4148 in mind. You should easily replace these.
Just make shure the ring (black ring in your photo) is going to the same side because it shows in which direction the electrons are allowed to flow (rectifier).
Never had one broken. Better replace them all when they are such brittle.
Kind regards Paul
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

Most likely a 1N4148 signal diode.
A very common diode. I have some. Even Maplin should have some

Some diodes have glass cases, so not really going brittle with age

Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb :!:
Looking forward to summer later in the year.

Diodes eh? Shows how much I know.

I can see some on Amazon for £1.99 (pack of 50) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00XWE ... ref=plSrch

Probably very expensive as these things go but if I have to get up to a minimum order value on cpc or pay a handling fee I may as well do that.

Thanks all!
