IIRC (and it's been quite a while since I looked at the Spud81 source), Spud81 emulates the correct border height and width. For some reason EightyOne make the border a little too wide and has a nasty hangover on the right edge when running FortyNiner. The positive thing from all this is I've decide...

How the hell do you load ZX-Xtricator?

I'd like to test it on Spud81 but can't even work out how to load it on EightyOne...

Down to 1:30 for the first track, played with Spud81. I have to say that the keys are a little less sensitive (or on my machine they are) than on EightyOne, which makes the game just a bit easier to play. Looks and works great on Spud81.
