But if mazogs didn't work without altering then it doesn't look into the systemvariable LASTK (which inkey does) but either uses the ROM call or own routines.

Inkey can only use single keys. But the ROM reads the keyboard by eight IN commands. Each can have five keys detected which makes the 40 keys. Games can do the same. But even with inkey you can use more directions. If the game takes T for up and V for down, F for left and G for right then R might be...

Joy81 is no miracle and we can make new boards if you're interested (or others as well)

As long as games use the inkey equivalent they don't need to be rewritten. That's what zxpand offers to the zeddy or otherwise it's own API.
Joy81 on the other hand implemented the exact keyboard behaviour and so games need not be rewritten.

Well, if you take away the cooling pad and desolder the modulator you might be able to put the ZX81 PCB upside down into the top right corner the connections could be in the correct order for power and tape. If you resolder the modulator to the bottom side of the PCB it might nearly line up with the...
