Ok problem solved !!
Tried to hook up the spectrum on another screen and I can see bright and sharp colors !
Definitely my LCD screen has the composite in screwed up.

Hi gozzo There is no such option in the screen menu to select PAL. I think it is automatic. I will check for any settings on the LCD but I do not think there is such an option on this LCD. Best things to do is try on a different LCD screen with composite video in.

When powering up I get the normal prompt screen black text/grey background.
May you tell me a couple of border colour commands as I am not used to Spectrum but was more a Commodore 64 user.
