Wilf's pages
Wilf's pages
Triggered by another post I've again thought about Wilf's ZX81 pages. Is anyone here in contact with Wilf any more? It would be a shame to lose these. I can see already that they have been pretty much abandoned and before things get worse than screens full of black diamonds I think they should be saved. I don't know enough about that internet thing but I suspect there are people here that do.
I think it would be best to ask Wilf before going ahead and re-hosting them, but I suspect just going ahead and doing it would not be a problem, If I were in that position I would be very pleased that someone cared enough about my work they would consider doing this.

Re: Wilf's pages
There is a problem reading the pages now in my browsers which has to do with the codepage.
When I call the pages it looks like this:
As soon as I choose manually code page west european (Latin 1) I get the correct display. I think this has to do with some changes in the hosting / web server profile settings (codepage) and probably browser expects UTF code for some reason. Normally it should be detected automatically but is detected wrong since more than 2 years now. But with this trick it is readable. By the way - Wilfs pages are also at archive.org saved. If you choose a page here 2 or 3 years back, it will be shown with correct code page as well.

Re: Wilf's pages
There are also some other problems in Wilf's pages: some links to e. g. images do not work. The link to them is corrupted, but can be corrected manualy:
- replace '/' by '\' (or vice versa) within their URL
- adapt the URL (lower/uppercase letters!) according to the URL of the parent page
I wrote an email to Wilf about that problems some years ago, but did not get any response

Perhaps his robotics research takes up all his free time so has moved on from our humble little computer?
Re: Wilf's pages
I've made a mirror on a free web host.
It can be accessed here:
http://wilf.wwww.dk
http://wilfr.000webhostapp.com
In a few days I'll replace all the "wrong chars" <?> on all the pages.

Re: Wilf's pages
That's a great start - Thanks Martin!
Re: Wilf's pages
Don't make too much work !
Replacing characters is not necessary.
As I said there is a problem in configuration of web server and documents.
Documents have been created with Microsoft Word Codepage 1252 while the web server delivers the documents as UTF8.
See here the header lines:
And view the HTML Source:
So the browser trusts the web server and treats the document as UTF8 while it was created obviously with Codepage 1252.
Setting the web server to code "iso latin-1" would let the characters appear right as it should be.
Re: Wilf's pages
If I remember Western European codepage sets it back correct. No more "diamond ?'s"!mrtinb wrote: ↑Fri Jun 09, 2017 10:34 pm I've made a mirror on a free web host.

please note that the links in your mirror still point to Wilf's pages, e. g.
http://wilf.wwww.dk/index_files/ROMKEY.htm
has a link to
"http://www.user.dccnet.com/wrigter/inde ... ROMKEY.ZIP"
which also is invalid and works only, if the "\" is replaced by "/":
http://www.user.dccnet.com/wrigter/inde ... ROMKEY.ZIP

Re: Wilf's pages
And some other links need also to be corrected:
The picture within
http://wilf.wwww.dk/index_files/SON%20of%20ZON.htm
is visible, if its url
http://www.user.dccnet.com/wrigter/inde ... age003.gif
is set to
"http://www.user.dccnet.com/wrigter/inde ... age003.gif"
where "son" has been replaced by "SON".
It seems, that Wilf's pages were moved from a server having a non-case-sensitive filesystem to another one having a case-sensitive filesystem!
