To go from mono to stereo, connect both channels together in the stereo plug. Make sure you attach a label saying “both channels linked together”.

To go from a two channel (stereo) plug to mono, connect to the left channel only in the stereo plug and wire to the mono plug. The 0V/GND/screen obviously also needs to be connected. Don’t make any connection to the right channel in the stereo plug. Note that this assumes that the output device is driving both left and right channels with the same signal.

I used that circuit to create a cassette tape from a wave file using Windows 7
