MEFISDOS?

I've seen this software mentioned several times in the forums.
  • What does it do?
  • Does it run on plain ZX81?
  • Is there a homepage where it is described / downloadable?

MEFISDOS is a disk operating system for a ZX81, developed by Joachim Merkl and Kai Fischer. It has been initially used to store ZX81 programs on hard disk. Meanwhile other device drivers do exists, so that MMC-cards or battery-buffered ram (ramdisk) is used to store program.
It runs usually in (E)EPROM at 8-16K, using 2 paged 16kB ram banks above 48K for working storage. But also a version without banking and running in ram at 8K exists (MINI-MEFISDOS), using the range 32K-64K as working storage. It uses its own file system, not Bill's FAT ....
