ZX81 Software Pack on SD Card

Post by RWAP »

I have a few customers who do not have access to a PC and are currently stuck with a standard ZX81, with possibly RAM pack.

I thought it might be an idea to put together a package of games on an SD card to supply together with a ZXpand to show them the best of the latest ZX81 software which has been produced.

Obviously, as this will be a commercial offering, I need the permission of the copyright holders, and will pay a small royalty on each copy sold.

So, what games should I include, and can the authors please contact me to agree terms...

Hi Rich,
later today I will pack my card's content and put it into sendspace.com.
Of course there is NO everything but at least they're grouped inteo several reasonable catalogues.
Maybe it would be useful, at least as an idea itself.

Hi Rich,

Whilst i think this is a good idea, i'm not entirley sure if people would pay extra.... however smaller sd cards can be had for a couple quid so maybe they would for minimal cost.

And if by some amazing feat any of my software old or new make it onto the card you have my full permmision to do hat ever you like with them, that permission should also extend to the end user on a not for profit basis.

I think people would pay a little extra for the games - especially when they don't have access to the internet to go finding and downloading games (for example if theiur only access to the internet is on a works PC or an internet cafe / library, people can't always use their own SD cards to store files)

My backup of ZXpand -

Order of folders might be useful.

Would it not be easier for those who don't have internet connection to have a high quality mp3 file on CD - You can fit hundreds (or more) of programs on a single cd and only need a cd player that can play mp3 files (most can now) and a cable to the tape in.

Which proves btw, that I'm still right and a support for tape users IS required. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

True, but it is still a slow loading method which does not always work... whereas the ZXpand is almost instant loading.

Maybe we could do with a guide as to how to create the requisite mp3 files as they are not freely available.

Yerz - thanks for your SD card details, but the main issue has to be copyright - I cannot put that onto an SD card and supply it to a third party, unless all of the files are known to be 100% public domain, or the authors give their permission for the files to be distributed in that format.

The same thing applies to a CD with mp3 files

I know that there are lots of bits of ZX81 software on the internet, but I don't hold with piracy (and before anyone suggests it, abandonware is NOT a legal status), so I would never offer this sort of service without full approval and consent.

I think it's a great idea as MP3/WAV etc are all largely unreliable compared to SD card.

Might be worth having a chat with Simon over at Cronosoft about it though. With my games, Beep's 1K stuff (would that still work on the hardware?) and some other stuff it could make a nice collection, especially if it was made a little special with extra notes, maps, cheats etc.
