Can you help convert this Lambda 8300 recording?

Hi All,

I have recently come across a lambda 8300 tape called "The Tube". I've been trying to convert it to TZX using EightyOne 1.2 - so far without any luck.
I have enclosed a wav 44.1khz 16 bit mono. Please follow this link to my dropbox:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/627 ... hetube.wav

Any hints or help would be greatly appreciated. the Lambda 8300 tape format is supposed to be identical to zx 81.

Best Regards

Anders

Hi Anders,

Limited experiments with my own Lambda 8300 seemed to indicate that while an 8300 could read and digest a ZX81 tape, (and run the program if it didn't involve machine code), the reverse was not true. i.e. a tape written by a Lambda is not compatible back to a ZX81. If I recall correctly, this was because the silent period the ZX81 needs at the beginning of a program, is replaced by a (rather shrill) tone by the Lambda. The Lambda can read both--silence or tone; the Zeddy cannot.

(Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone.)

There may be other options though. I will grab your file and see if I can load it into my Lambda and/or ZX81/TS1000. There should be a solution somehow.

Ian

The .wav file seems to have 2 recordings in it. A louder first one, and a softer second trailer. I've been concentrating on the former, thinking perhaps the (abbreviated?) second recording is just something that was left on the tape.

The first program doesn't have that signature 8300 squeal I referred to. Is it a ZX81 program rather than a Lambda? Or did the beginning accidentally get cut off?

It also has at least a couple of rather severe dropouts, which I assume to be tape related. I've tried making up for this through sound editor embroidery, but was unsuccessful. My machine goes numb in the first fraction of a second, and I can't see why, unless the .wav file is not complete. Did the front of the program, including the squeal, not get played in its entirety when the .wav was recorded?

Either way Anders, I would like to request that you record the .wav again, being sure you're centered on the right program. If we get that right, then I think I can fix the dropouts from the tape.

I have a device which repeats and "cleans up" a signal from questionable tapes, that I constructed from a magazine article in the early 80's. It does a good job, and has salvaged many an "un-loadable" program. So far, it hasn't worked on this one, but with a new file I will keep trying. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ian- thanks a lot for taking a look.

I'm a complete novice with respect to Lambda 8300 (and ZX81 for that matter)

I'll do a re-recording, as I can not recall if I cut off some sound at the beginning of the recording. The reason I think it is lambda 8300 related is that the casette it self is from a Danish company that published a lot of Lambda programs.

I my self was puzzled by the rather long pause between the two recordings - you might be right that the latter is simply remains of a previous recording.

I'm heading off to bed - but you should have a new recording within a few days.

Best Regards

Anders

Hi Andejens,

The Danish translation of the 2nd program is:
When programs should be saved on tape
3 (mic) is connected with mic on the tape recorder
You should not have connected ear when you save
on the tape recorder
If you want to save a program on tape you write
save program name
press rec and play on tape recorder

There must be someone else in that bed with you keeping you busy Anders! :D

Aheeemmm - I'd rather not answer that...
Anyway - I'm back :D

I have done a new recording of the entire tape it can be found here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/86unf9yfa9l0y ... 1.wav?dl=0

The tape I most likely damaged. But it is interesting as It seems to originate from a danish publisher - link to picture here:

Perhaps a review copy for a magazine. I'm assuming it is lambda - but it could also be ZX81 - as J.C. Jumbo Data did publish quite a bit for the Sinclair computers.
I promise not to sleep that long in the future
