I will give it a try in the lunch break in the office tomorrow, because at home I don't have any Windows based machine around.

Thanks for the ts2068 keyboard. One correction, the SYMBL U key should be OR instead of ON.

Version 1.12 is now available. It corrects this and a few other minor errors in the newly added keyboard images. It now also displays the ZX80's Integral Functions list alongside its keyboard image.

is it common for the screen to blink when you're typing on the zx81?

When you’re in FAST mode: Yes.

It boots in slow mode.

As Martin says the blinking should only be apparent when switched into fast mode.

Note that it is only the ZX81 / TS1000 / TS1500 that have a “SLOW” “display and compute” mode.

The earlier ZX80 only has “FAST” mode.

With a ZX80, and with a ZX81 / TS1000 / TS1500 in FAST mode, the computer will only generate a display picture if BASIC is waiting for keyboard input from the user, or if the program is PAUSEd. Whenever BASIC is processing a command, dealing with an input, or running a program, it will stop generating the screen display, so the video display will go blank (black).

If you are typing in a program, on a ZX80, or on a ZX81 / TS1000 / TS1500 in FAST mode, with every key press, the display will “blink” as BASIC stops generating the display, processes the keyboard input, checks what you have typed, and then generates the display as it waits for your next keypress.
