Salvo Game on tape

Post by GCHarder »

I got this tape from an Ebay auction. It's a version of Battleship for two players. I've loaded it several times into a T/S 1000 OK. I've also tried to make a P file using the audio input line but with no success. If somebody with more experience doing this wants to give it a try let me know and I'll send you the tape.

Regards;

Greg

Nice find!

Before shipping your valuable tape around, can you try making an audio .WAV file from it, and post it here? If I or someone can get that to load, then you'll have your .P file.

My grandfather taught me a pencil and paper game of this type when I was a kid. He referred to it by the whimsical name "Sink the Swiss Navy", but I think Salvo was the more commonly used name. In our particular variant, you didn't just "peg" a given shot, but recorded the round by the turn number. Thus if you had hit the opponents battleship with a "1" and a "4" for example, you could examine your attack grid for possible locations which fit that criteria only. This made the game superior to the Milton-Bradley cash-in, imho.

Hi, Greg.
It seems strange, I've never had problems in the translations from tape to file .P.
Using a tape recorder, the tape is loaded regularly on ZX81?

I in its time I used the program Audacity and an homebuilt cable to connect the PC to the recorder. If you are interested I send you the wiring diagram and the indications on how to proceed.
If you make many transfers from tape to PC, I suggest you buy an item like this:

I've used audacity to record the program and I've also tried E.A.C. neither WAV file will load into EO.

Since the program loads OK using the cassette player on the real ZX81 there must be something wrong with recording the WAV onto the PC, which I'm missing.

If you can load it into a real T/S 1000: add a ZXPAND, so you can SAVE the loaded program as P-File to MMC card ...
