Excuse me, but the ZX81 BASIC is a “proper” BASIC even if It may not be to your liking.

Also note that a generic term such as “ZX BASIC” is meaningless, as there are also the ZX80 BASIC and ZX Spectrum BASIC versions. Plus the SuperBASIC used on the QL. Each of which are different from one another, due to the BASIC evolving as more space was available in the ROM in each model.

In terms of a computer being able to save or load a BASIC program for use on a different model or make, that was something that was not practical or available for most home computer systems in the 1980s and even in the 1990s. There were even some MSDOS systems that could not run programs designed for other MSDOS systems.

I agree with that sentiment,Mark.

It may be a tad on the slow side but it is fairly fully featured and it's string handling/slicing is a joy to use.
A BASIC interpreter along with a floating point maths/trig package and syntax error trapping all in 8k, such a maths package is something you'd pay good money for on a PC (Calculator ap notwithstanding), bloody wonderful I'd say.

- Mom how do I start the game?

- You just type in "RAND USR 27400" honey !

- How?

- press T control L 2 7 4 0 0

- ok mom. Easy! (says the alien girl to her mother)

I like you all, you are all gentlemen, but if one likes the zx basic is because he is sentimetally attached from his childhood.

It is annoying as f.

It reminds me of the time when we hadn't invented the typing system.

Like in egypt where the hieroglyphics combined multiple syllabes in one character.

Have you tried Acorn Atom BASIC?

Oh, and I never had a ZX81 in my childhood.

PS not all games were started with RAND USR ….

If you are so fond of typing everything try out COBOL.
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. But, in practice, there is.

I can't say I am fond of...

I just think typing letter by letter is just normal... it just feels natural.

Haven't tried cobol or acorn atom basic.

I'm a COBOL developer by profession. It's not as bad as people make it.

My main objection about the ZX81 Basic is that it is so slow to edit a program. So I use an assembler instead. But I prefer to use the real hardware.

I don't quite know how to put this but I was a child of the 50's/60's so 20-30 years possibly before you were walking the planet and before Sinclair BASIC existed so certainly no sentimentality from myself I can assure you and not all Sinclair users were children.
I like Sinclair BASIC for the reasons stated above and I'm sure others feel the same. ;)
