me wonders if this particular ZXpand+ is one that snuck out without that smoothing capacitor ?

Should be a capacitor near to the regulators I only mention it as my board was missing it, and it exhibited some strange behaviour and worst of all serial comms didn't work properly because of it.

In centre bottom dark thing just below and to the left of the diamond shaped chip...

The diamond is actually a square isn't it?
