ZXpand and AY board

Post by Reinier83 »

Hi some time I ago make a post about a broken Timex 1000,It is now working again
But i'm thinking to buy one off those ZXpand + AY board and maybe a second AY board. But are there allot STC songs made for the ZX81 to play?
And I see on one youtube video that is possibile to use 2 AY board's, but are they many songs made for this kind a 2 AY board's setup?

Hi

there as far as i am aware there are only the 6 channel tracks written by the very talented Yerzmyey that were specifically written for the ZX81 with dual AY/YM chips, there are a further dozen or so tracks written for the ZX Spectrum that can be made to work. it must also be noted that whilst 6 channels is fun, the player uses up so much processor time that little else is possible,

a single 3 channel STC (compiled soundtracker) is less hungry and leaves enough time for other useful processing to be done.

HTH regards Andy

And also - more about the quantity of songs.

There is COUNTLESS number of STC and PT3 files (those You can play on ZX81 without any particular converting. Just copy them into SD and use a proper player).
http://bulba.untergrund.net/Tr_Songs.7z
The STC and PT3 files must work. (Short names only, on ZXpand - as I described below).

A harder thing appears regarding the TS songs. There are quite many of them on the Net, but they're mostly in ZX Spectrum format or in format that ZX81 can't handle without adjusting.
What I mean is - the TurboSound songs must be compiled into address 25000. So You'd have to take this pack for example http://bulba.untergrund.net/TSMusicPack.7z load EVERY song (arrrrgh) into VortexTracker http://bulba.untergrund.net/VT1.0beta19.7z and now use:
File / Export / Save with ZX Spectrum player /
change DEC "Compilation address" into 25000
and change format into "Hobeta without player".

Save the file. ;P
Now You have the file on PC disk. Change the file's extension into *.TS (and remember - it must have 8 letters only, for ZXpand. And no strange signs like "_" or sommit).

And now You can play the file on ZX81. But there must be some chip changed in MrX. Could anybody explain this problem? I never know what's that. Except it's related with ports-changing in MrX (to use both AYs independently).
