I was going through my closets and found a ton of EPROMs of all flavors.

So I wondered, what is the going price to have these chips burnt for custom ROMs and ZX upgrade ROMs... etc?

are you thinking of offering an eprom burning service, or are you after someone to burn some for you?

interesting idea.... I'll have to dig the rest of my closets to find my burners, and I'd have to fire up the old XT since my old burners were DOS based, providing I find the software with them.

no (m not going in business. just curious what the cost of burning EPROM is.

I once had a board I built for my spectrum that allowed me to store and run programs from EPROM. perhaps having more programs put on eproms might be worth the cost of having them done.

I haven't got an EPROM burner but I've found an article on how to use an Arduino as a burner. I think this will be sufficient for me.

I'm trying to say that it's not so difficult as it used to be, to burn an EPROM, because the Internet has given so many possibilities.

The cost is falling rapidly like the cost of manufacturing a PCB has.

For another project that I run I sell EPROMS for £2 + postage. If someone sends me an EPROM I won't charge to burn it for them. In truth they never do, though

Many of the hardware hackers and tinkerers will have a programmer.

When members do ask if someone can 'burn' an EPROM (or a EEPROM / flash chip) for them, often a nearby member will only ask for the cost of return postage. Although you may often see an offer of a free beer from the member asking for help as a thank you.

The remaining repair businesses will also program chips, but of course they will charge for this service. I don't think it costs that much, but seeing as I have my own programmers, I have never asked...

Just be aware that the EPROMs that require either a 21V or a 25V supply for programming are very power hungry and some cheap programmers that only run from from a 5V DC USB supply often fail to correctly 'burn' these older EPROMs.

These days, EEPROMs and flash chips can be used, and most of them only need a normal 5V DC supply during programming

The last burnt eprom I bought cost £4 plus p&p.

Some types command higher prices due to their rarity and/or difficulty of programming. The TI 25xx series for example. You often need a more specialist programmer (read: expensive) for these.
