Because ZXPand extends the power on reset. Just as my earlier proposed larger reset capacitor does.

I have fitted a 4.7uF capacitor and so far it has switched on fine every time regardless of what is or isn’t plugged in.

Fingers crossed it stays that way. Thanks all! :D
