ZX80 Power Supply- how many designs were there ?

Post by jetman »

Hi folks-

I have 2 original ZX80 power supply units (see photographs).

One is black, without an LED.
One is black, with a LED light at the top

I am also aware of a third design which is white ( see photograph from the Internet).

Does anyone know if the different power supplies represent different production dates, or if one design is rarer than the rest ?

Looking at photos on the Internet, I haven't seen another example of a black power supply with a LED light.

Cheers.

Hello and welcome to our forum Jetman :D

It’s perfectly possible that the LED has been added later. I can’t see Sinclair wanting to spend money on a LED for a PSU for a budget computer. In fact, no ZX81 or ZX Spectrum computer or PSU for these ever had LEDs fitted as standard.

With the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum PSUs, Sinclair used multiple suppliers for the PSUs for these machines (from the outside, you can’t tell as all the manufacturers used the same case style), so it’s likely the same may have happened with the ZX80 PSU.

There are four lights!
Step up to red alert. Sir, are you absolutely sure? It does mean changing the bulb :!:
Looking forward to summer later in the year.

Thaks for the reply. I suppose it could have been added later.

However, the LED does seem to be perfectly integrated into the power supply and (visually at least) it all looks orignal.

I suppose the question may be answered if another one ever turn up !
