Removing ZX81 keyboard adhesive

Post by Ravenger »

I'm attempting to replace the keyboard on my refurbed ZX81. Turns out the keyboard wasn't refurbed, and is the original 1980 branded one, which is why it's failed.

However I've got the keyboard off but the adhesive has remained stuck to the case and I can't shift it.

Any tips on removing it? isopropyl alcohol and white spirit haven't worked.

Obviously I can't stick on the new keyboard until I've removed that adhesive.

I’ve used hot water to soften the adhesive, then used a plastic tool to scrape most of it off.

Hot water or a hairdryer are ideal to make it easier to remove.

IPA and a soft cloth. And a lot of time…

Soak the cloth in IPA and run vigorously.

I too find a swift jog around the block often helps! (Sorry Lardo couldn't resist)

Other than that I leave the old one in place cut the tails and install the new one over the top, although obviously too late in the OP's case.

Thanks for the answers!

I've ordered some adhesive remover which should be safe for use on the plastic case of the ZX81, and will see if that helps.

If not, it's a hot air/water and a lot of scrubbing!

Quick update, the adhesive remover worked, but it took a good 5 or 6 applications and rubbing with a cloth to remove it.

The new keyboard is now fitted and working (though I had an issue where its position was slightly off and had to peel and re-stick, but it all worked out).

So now I'll be looking at doing my other ZX81 and at the same time composite modding it.
