Does ZXpand work with Spectrum? Strange it has ZX81 software in ROM.

My belief is that it’s NOT for the Spectrum. Someone must have misunderstood.

ZXpand/ZXpand+ do not work with the ZX Spectrum (any model, for many reasons including but not limited to: a lot of the signals on the edge-connector are in different positions, the overlay ROM only works with the ZX81).

I've seen quite a few listings that have this ZX spectrum/ZX81 thing in the title and I'm of the opinion that it's either ignorance of the product, an attention grabber to make the product more interesting or a vain hope that a novice spectrum owner might buy it as a must have interface, not that it would fool anyone here.

Hi,

I was going to start using the ZX81, if the ZXspand was available.

Pity the design was not open source.

Looks like they stay in the box...

There are a couple of ZXpand available now. But why not consider the ZX-WESPI? Instead of SD Card, it has 1MB built-in storage along with WiFi storage -- and it fits inside the case. An advantage over the ZXpand which hangs off the rear connector

ZXpand includes:
  • 32k RAM, that can also be put in the area 8k-16k
  • Some software is built for the ZXpand only
  • ZX-Wespi has only fast LOAD, but slow SAVE
  • ZX-Wespi files are stored in a big pile, where ZXpand can be organized in folders and have a file manager
  • ZXpand supports UDG graphics together with the expansion UDG4ZXpand, however they are becoming rarer than ZXpand
  • ZXpand has built in WRX hires graphics support
  • ZXpand supports load and save from any memory location
I use my ZX-Wespi a lot myself, but sometimes ZXpand is the only solution for the job.

Hi,

Forgive my ignorance, but can the ZXspand and the ZX-Wespi work together?

ZXpand uses custom LOAD and SAVE.

ZX-Wespi uses built-in tape LOAD and SAVE commands.

For use of ZX-Wespi with an attached ZXpand, you must use the command CONFIG "X" first, to disable the ZXpand.

Then I have created a small program which I load from the ZX-Wespi, that enables the ZXpand again. This way you can switch between them.
