Canabalt on Zeddy???

Post by kokkiklhs »

As the title says: Would it be technically possible to port this wonderful infinite-runner game to our beloved Zeddy?

IMHO it's the perfect platform for its black/white esthetic!
I already know about the *good* "Rush" game of Revival Studios, but it doesn't seem too attractive to my eyes.
We've seen wonderful hi-res games with moving "sprites", nice backgrounds and so on... so, why not Canabalt?
The trickiest part of course would be the parallax scrolling (don't know if it's possible even in theory).
And as of sound, it's not even needed but it could be added with an AY option!

Could anyone of you, experienced coders explain wether the creation of a decent port of this nice and addictive game is possible/impossible and some details about it?
I'm just curious...
Thanks for any clues!!
8-)

I don't know anything about the game in question but I would say that the parallax jobby is possible using the 81's standard Character set as Don Priestley managed it with City Patrol.

City Patrol is a well-known great game, one of the best written on the Zeddy, ever!
The parallax effect looks really nice (especially for its era, it was superb) but I'm talking about hi-res here and that's why I'm wondering about its possibilities...
Canabalt is a recent, very nice and addictive game, it started from mobile phones/tablets but it was soon ported to a variety of retro systems with its original or other names.
Here's the original:

And have a look at the excellent C64 version, which is my favourite by far (even though it has no parallax scrolling) but it has a killer SID music arrangement:

Ooooh, I've missed that one! Great coding, you're a real life wizard, you know!!
Super-cool!!!

How about a 16k version with some nice scrolling background (OK, no parallax, this is TOO much to ask) and animated running figure in the original Canabalt style? (though I LOVE the iron, it rocks!!!)
You've already done more than half the job, please, please, please consider this idea for the future!!

If you missed that one you might have missed more.....
So as a birthdaypresent I bundled all games at that moment (15-12-2017).

You still miss 3 sportssims, Loderunner and 2 Hidden Pictures, but you get the most in 1 go.

It could be done, but I still have ideas for other 1K hires and I still have an unfinished project on the ZX Spectrum

Actually, not too much to ask at all. I made such a game back in in 2013, called: "Rush"
The game uses parallax scrolling as well.

You can find all about it at my website: http://www.revival-studios.com/sinclair.php

Also, I will release a native Chroma81 update for the game soon:

I believe Villordsutch got a requrest for review/playthrough for this game, so once that is live i will post a link here.

Thanks Andy! I will be releasing my previous games with native Chroma81 support over the next couple of weeks.
I'm very happy of how they all turned out. For some of the games i really went the extra mile to get the best out of this great expansion.
