Never had a problem removing say ULA's from issue 3 boards with just a pump and sucker, and replacing them even easier in the absence of sockets,not ruined one yet.

Like you say damaging the board is the main thing and I've always found spectrum boards to be more fragile than the 81.

There were four then I went to work and then ...gone!

The Cat see's all.... besides you dont need one, you can hold your finger on it all day and it only gets a little warm :D
