RVC video encoder

Post by nollkolltroll »

OK, I've been hard at work lately to finish some kind of release of my ZX81 video encoder.
Here is the first result with source, binary encoder for windows, and example video streams / ZX81 players.
Hopefully I get some input from you on how to get better at cross compiling the encoder (NOT my strong suite), and you can share your thoughts on the encoder and its results. This is an open source release, and I REALLY hope I am not the only one interested in making improvements.

EDIT: added source to the player
EDIT: updated package to v0.4:
- Faster encoding
- Better, more even quality for fullscreen

It's all in the release notes (the PDF), basically you drop the player and video files in a folder on the SD-card of your ZXpand, connected via UDG4ZXpand to the ZX81.

Just tried to launch the program on my win 7 machine only to get an error message saying not compatible with this version of windows, so win 10 only I assume?

The exe is cross-compiled on my Linux box, and I've only tried it under Wine. Unfortunately I have no idea if it works on anything else.

Unfortunately I'm not smart enough for the mysteries of linux or anything remotely command line based and rely on just clicking a windows icon and let the magic happen.
If anyone manages to compile a working win7 version I'd be extremely grateful.

Also whilst the P files run superbly on real 81 EO just throws up a screen Showing "RVC-PLAYER V0.1" repeatedly, regardless of settings.

EO v1.12 for reference.

Thanks. Time to buy a UDG4ZX then I guess.

OK Moggy, I had time to start and test on a windows computer now. It works under win10, 64bit. Maybe you tried it on a win7, 32bit?

If you only get the player-text, the video file (.RVC) is probably missing from the folder of the player. You need to place the player (.P) and video file (.RVC) in the SD-card folder of EO.

Many thanks for time and trouble taken with this Adam.

All files on EO are where they should be but I'm not concerned over that as I'm mainly a real 81 user who finds EO a pain in the arse at the best of times.

Just tried it on a win 10 64 bit machine and see that it is indeed a command line program which sadly is beyond my ancient feeble brain so unfortunately will have to pass on this one.

Excellent work all the same.

Just ordered a UDG4ZXpand. Looking forward to seeing this in the flesh!
