Web-Browser for ZX81: ZeddyFox V1.0

Post by siggi »

The first web-browser for the ZX81 with ethernet card (Zeddynet) is available
It allows to directly load a P file from a web-server anywhere in the Internet into the Zeddy.
It also allows to view HMTL files. But only as text ;)

The command line interface supports the following commands:
"L URL(,address)" to load a (P or any other) file into the Zeddy (optionally at a given address)
"Z URL" to display a (HTML or any other) page
"ZEDDYFOX" starts the browser, where you can use the cursor keys to select a link and CR to follow it (or to load a P file).

The browser could be found in Tom's forum:
http://forum.tlienhard.com/phpBB3/viewt ... ?f=2&t=714

And that is its help screen:

Have fun
Siggi

PS: That is the only browser, that supports Sinclair Basic instead of Java script

My Zeddy is still disconnected from the 'net, but I hope not for long!

Once I get my display issues sorted I really must put my Zeddy online.

What is needed? And where do I get the hard/software from?

The hardware (schema) and software are all in Tom's Forum. Here are some links to the threads there:

The beginning and the hardware:
http://forum.tlienhard.com/phpBB3/viewt ... ?f=2&t=273

An IRC chat client:
http://forum.tlienhard.com/phpBB3/viewt ... ?f=2&t=644

A backup program to a network server:
http://forum.tlienhard.com/phpBB3/viewt ... ?f=7&t=684

Network printer driver:
http://forum.tlienhard.com/phpBB3/viewt ... ?f=2&t=655

Network Filemanager:
http://forum.tlienhard.com/phpBB3/viewt ... ?f=2&t=627

HTH Siggi

PS:
The Zeddy needs ram at address 8-16K to store network system variables and buffers
Most network programs run above 32K (need 8 or 16K ram there) to leave space at 16-32K to load/save a BASIC program there.
So the ZX81 should have at least 32K ram, but 40K are recommended.

Yes, I thought the same, after I had read that the "small" browser LYNX needs about 1MB of ram  to run ...

Here it is:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4PRiQq5VZs
It shows how the network card is initialized (using IPCONFIG), how I fetch the latest version of ZeddyFox from my PC (using the network filemanager NFM) and how I download a file (using ZeddyFox) from my web-server.

Back in 2007 I posted in the World of Spectrum forums "complaining" that there was no Ethernet interface for the Spectrum, and Winston and others shared their ideas and suggestions. I remember that at the time I used Siggi's webserver as an example of how the ZX81 community was way ahead of the game. Winston started developing the Spectranet and now Siggi develops an interface for the Zeddy based on Winston's work. Fantastic!
