You assume that the use of a ZX81 is mainly in an emulator that supports UDG. If that's the case, then by all means do use UDG.

Many like to use real hardware however, and real hardware that supports UDG is rare.

HI,
Martin, note the ZXPRINTER printer can "Display" specials characters codes by moving the IR register on a RAM offset!
The ULA display will be corrupt, but the printer UDG will be changed.
