I just did the first test on using an 8MHz crystal on my Minstrel ZX80 clone. Inspired by https://hackaday.io/project/28963/galle ... b09145c1a8
With 3 bytes changed in the ROM, it worked just as I wanted. Giving 32 characters, but compressed to the left with room for 12 more characters. Next up will be to mod the ROM even further so that BASIC uses all the extra screen real estate.
Of course, the ZX80 is now 23% faster

Re: Super ZX80
Did some updating of the ROM, found something to fix in SCROLL-routine. Seems to work properly now.

Re: Super ZX80
Cool - I might buy another Minstrel clone to experiment. Super ZX80 sounds good to me

Re: Super ZX80
Shaun, not trying to dissuade you from getting more stuff, but if you already have a Minstrel the only thing you need is a way to swap crystals (I use machined socket pins) and an (E)EPROM. Not a very risky mod to undertake, and VERY fast to return to original.
